What you need to know about sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, formed by spinal nerve roots L4, L5, S1, S2, and S3. Irritation of the sciatic nerve can lead to pain that radiates from your low back to your buttock and down the back of your leg. Some people with sciatica will experience numbness, tingling or muscle weakness.

The pain of sciatica

Sciatic nerve first goes down through the buttock, and then its branches extend down the back of the leg to the ankle and foot. The sciatic pain over lumbar region, usually with numbness sensation along the hip region and radiates down to the leg. Symptoms would be aggravated by coughing and sneezing.

Delays in treatment: a great danger to patients

For severe cases, complications like absence of lower limb reflexes and muscle atrophy would exist. For chronic cases, conditions would deteriorate and develop Cauda-equina Syndrome which may cause incontinence.

Why sciatica hurts

Sciatic Pain may be caused by prolapsing intervertebral disc, osteophytes or intervertebral foramen stenosis would cause compression on the nerve roots. In addition, sports injury, repetitive motions and improper posture would also give rise to sciatic pain.

 

Most sciatica patients feel better after receiving Spine and Physiotherapy treatment for a few weeks or a few months later. Of course, different effects depending on the patient's different circumstances, it is recommended to have a regular spinal check in every six months.
